Summer Reading Challenge
Given the current situation and the impact of social distancing on schools and public libraries, the all-new digital Summer Reading Challenge has been launched in an online format.
We would love all the children to be involved in the Summer Reading Challenge as it provides a great opportunity to become immersed in new stories and places and deliver a real love of reading. “Silly Squad” is a celebration of funny books, happiness and laughter, featuring artwork from award-winning children's author and illustrator Laura Ellen Anderson.
To take part, parents/carers need to register children online in a secure two-step verification process : http://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk.
For the first time, children can set their own reading target (although six is still recommended) and they will unlock rewards, badges etc. as they go along.
Portsmouth public libraries offer a wealth of free children's eBooks, all accessible online with a library card. https://portsmouth.spydus.co.uk
There have been a whole host of virtual events with guest celebrities and authors to mark the launch of the digital Challenge on the Summer Reading Challenge Facebook page and the Summer Reading Challenge website will be updated soon to include new Home and School Zones. The website is free to access and a place for children to rate and review their books and work towards their reading goal. It also features video content, games, quizzes and digital and downloadable activities to incentivise and encourage children and their families to take part in the Challenge at home.
Based on the current Government advice, a limited number of larger public libraries are due re-open in early July, so families will hopefully be able to borrow physical books over the summer.
